George Villanueva

Image of George Villanueva George Villanueva is a Ph.D. candidate in the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. He pursues questions about the changing global context of community, civil society, democracy, and the city. His dissertation will study issues of sustainable urban development and civic engagement related to the implementation of the Northeast Los Angeles (NELA) Collaborative project funded by the HUD Partnership for Sustainable Communities. At USC, he is a researcher for Metamorphosis, a project studying the transformations of urban communities within the greater Los Angeles area.

A 2012 Interdisciplinary Research Group Fellow, his other research interests include communication for social change, community media, phenomenology, visual anthropology, urban studies, and Philippine/ Filipino-American existences. He also is a candidate for the Graduate Certificate in Visual Anthropology. George is currently working on the completion of the visual anthropology program, where he is in the process of producing a CRCC-IRG sponsored visual documentary about the cultural and civic production of the Sainto NiƱo Ati-Atihan Festival in the Philippines.
