Senior fellows to speak at UCLA's "Looking for Judaism in Unconventional Places" symposium
CRCC Senior Fellows Bruce Phillips and Diane Winston will speak at "Looking for Judaism in Unconventional Places," a symposium held by the UCLA Center for Jewish Studies on February 12-13.
This conference will examine the significance of the transformations for American Jewish religious communities. Leading scholars engaged in the study of issues related to current trends in U.S. religious communities will probe the strength of commitment to the Reform and Conservative movements and examine the efforts to create a religious life beyond them—including emerging pockets of energy and innovation in Los Angeles.
The conference is sponsored by the Center for Jewish Studies with support from the NEH Jewish Civilization Endowment and co-sponsored by the UCLA Study of Religion IDP and the UCLA Center for the Study of Religion.
Phillips will speak on the panel for Session III: "New Trends in Jewish Religious Life" at 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 13. Also speaking will be Shaul Magid (Indiana), Jack Wertheimer (JTS), and David N. Myers (UCLA).
Later that day at 2:30 p.m., Winston will speak on a panel for Session IV: "Reflections on the Conference," moderated by Carol Bakhos (UCLA). Also participating in the session are Jonathan Sarna (Brandeis), William McKinney (Pacific School of Religion), and Dana Evan Kaplan (University of the West Indies & the United Congregation of Israelites Synagogue).
Pre-registration for the event is required. To RVSP, contact cjsrsvp@humnet.ucla.edu or (310) 267-5327.
