Application Process

We are no longer accepting applications for the 2011-2012 institute.

Important Dates

  • August 31, 2011, 6:00 p.m. PST: Last day to request an application online form.
  • September 6, 2011, 6:00 PM PST: Application online form, application fee, and recommendation letter(s) must be RECEIVED by this date.
  • September 19, 2011: Acceptance Notification will be sent out via e-mail.
  • September 26, 2011: Deadline for receipt of Acceptance Forms.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a leadership position on staff of an organization engaged in civic work in the Muslim community, or with an organization working on issues that affect the Muslim community. (Individuals who are chief executive officers, chief operating officers, program directors, program coordinators, lead organizers, and board members are qualified to apply.)
  • Be between the ages of 25-40 at the time of application.
  • Be proficient in written and spoken English. The program does not have formal educational requirements, but applicants with a bachelor's degree or advanced degree are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Confirm that they can attend all AMCLI residential programs. (October 26-30, 2011; January 25-29, 2012; April 18-22, 2012.)

Step 1: Request an individualized application link.

Step 2: Complete the application and submit materials.
Once you have received an e-mail from AMCLI with a link to your individualized application form, please ensure that you have completed all of the items in the following checklist.

Complete applications must be received by 6:00 PM PST, Tuesday, September 6, 2011, and include ALL of the following components:

  1. Complete online application: All sections must be fully completed along with your essay questions and resume/CV.
  2. Non-refundable application fee ($35): Your payment (cashiers check/money order ONLY) must be made out to "University of Southern California" and write “AMCLI” in the memo line.

  3. Submit Nomination letter(s). See Steps 3 and 4 below.

Step 3: Recommendation Letter Submission.
If you are an AMCLI alum, please DO NOT use the link in this section, use the AMCLI Alumni Recommendation Letter link in Step 4 below.

Applicants must submit a recommendation letter from one person who is familiar with your work, and specifically your civic engagement work with the Muslim community. This required letter cannot be submitted by an AMCLI alum. Applications will not be considered complete until the letter of recommendation is received. Letters must be received by the application due date (6:00 PM PST, Tuesday, September 6, 2011). Only one letter of recommendation (not including an AMCLI Alumni Recommendation letter) will be accepted.

Step 4: AMCLI Alumni Recommendation Letter Submission (Optional)
If an applicant has been referred by an AMCLI alum, or is familiar with an alum, they are encouraged to seek a recommendation letter from them. The AMCLI alum is encouraged to submit a letter of recommendation letter describing the applicant's civic engagement work with the Muslim community and specifically addressing what the applicant will contribute and gain from AMCLI. Please note that the optional letter from an AMCLI alum may not replace the above required recommendation letter. The optional AMCLI Alum Recommendation Letter must be received by the application deadline (6:00 PM PST, Tuesday, September 6, 2011) to be considered as part of the application.
