Jawane Hilton is not only a pastor; he also serves on his city council. After participating in the USC Cecil Murray Center for Community Engagement’s programs for faith leaders, Hilton deepened his civil service calling and became a council member for the city of Carson. In the video, Hilton discusses his plans to bring city government and community together and create a policy agenda that suits the needs of the community.
Hilton encourages the people of Carson to become a proactive, not just reactive force, through registering to vote, investing in their community and setting up mentorship programs. Hilton also is a pastor of a multicultural church, which has an education program that helps young people obtain their high school diplomas.
The Cecil Murray Center for Community Engagement at the University of Southern California equips faith leaders to empower communities through civic engagement and economic development work. The Murray Center is based at the USC Center for Religion and Civic Culture.
